“I’m screwed!” Vienna dropped the paper and covered her face. Even with the fear and thoughts of failure, hope and excitement rose. She focused on her conversation with Valda about Year Twenty, how she’d choose a focus and hold on to that, and the fact she had a spells class.

Ms. Blight opened the door and put a hand on Vienna’s shoulder. “We will have none of that, my dear. It’s always overwhelming at first, but you’ll do wonderful.” Ms. Blight was very matter-of-fact; it almost helped ease Vienna’s fear.

Almost. “You don’t understand . . . ”

“I do, Miss Madizza-Corey. I was selected as your guidance counselor because your parents know me. Well, your mother does. See,” she continued as she pulled her seat over and sat by Vienna, “I was also your mother’s guidance counselor. She felt you needed someone on your side.” She leaned over to whisper, “But we must not speak out loud regarding why you are nervous.” She straightened back up. “Remember, I am here for you, and you can come to me for anything.”

“Wow . . . you look so young.” Vienna took in her features, wide-eyed with shock. Ms. Blight blinked with a mysterious smile, then pivoted to leave.

Before Vienna could speak, Ms. Blight was at the door, gesturing it was time to go. “Shall we?”

Vienna was filled with questions, but it wasn’t the time. She picked up her stuff and headed out to explore her new school.
